Unlock PDF

Open a password-protected PDF with the password you know and save a clean copy that no longer asks for it.

Server conversion Free

Only needed if the file refuses to open without one. Most locked PDFs merely restrict printing and copying — those unlock with this box left empty.

The server converter is available.

What this tool does

Most PDFs that look locked are not password-protected: a file can forbid printing and copying while still opening without asking anything, and that is the common case here. Add it and press the button. Either way the content is untouched — text stays selectable and images are not re-encoded — because only the encryption layer is removed.

The work is done by qpdf on the server, because decryption has to happen before a browser can read the file at all. Both the upload and the result are deleted as soon as the download is served.

How to convert it

  1. Add the protected PDF.
  2. Type its password — or leave the field empty if it opens without one.
  3. Type the password only if the file refuses to open without one; otherwise skip this step.

When to use it

  • A statement or ticket that you are allowed to read but that will not open in your PDF reader.
  • A file you need to merge, search or archive without a password prompt.

What it cannot do

  • You have to know the password. This does not break encryption, and it cannot open a file you are locked out of.
  • Only use it on documents you have the right to modify.

Questions about this conversion

Is this PDF tool really free?

Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no daily limit on the number of files. The tools run on your own device, so there is no per-file cost to pass on to you.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

Not for this tool: the conversion happens in your browser and the file is never sent anywhere. Where a job genuinely needs a server, the page says so before you start and deletes the copy with the job.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Pages are keyboard reachable and the drop area accepts the phone file picker. Large documents are limited by the memory of the device rather than by the site.

Can I use the output commercially?

Yes. We claim no rights over your documents or the files produced from them, and we add nothing to the output.
