Encrypt the document with AES-256 so it opens only with your password, and choose whether readers may print or copy.

What this tool does
This tool writes real AES-256 encryption into the PDF, the same standard your bank statement uses. Opening the file asks for the password you set; without it, the pages cannot be read.
Encryption is done by qpdf on the server, because a browser cannot write a conforming encrypted PDF. The file is deleted as soon as the download has been served, and the page says so before you start.
How to convert it
- Add the PDF.
- Type the password you want to open it with.
- Choose whether readers may print, copy or only view.
- Press “Encrypt this PDF”, then download it.
When to use it
- Sending a contract, an invoice or a payslip by email.
- Storing a document somewhere less private than you would like.
What it cannot do
- There is no password recovery. If you lose it, the file cannot be opened by us or by anyone else.
- A PDF that is already encrypted has to be unlocked first.
Questions about this conversion
Is this PDF tool really free?
Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no daily limit on the number of files. The tools run on your own device, so there is no per-file cost to pass on to you.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
Not for this tool: the conversion happens in your browser and the file is never sent anywhere. Where a job genuinely needs a server, the page says so before you start and deletes the copy with the job.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Pages are keyboard reachable and the drop area accepts the phone file picker. Large documents are limited by the memory of the device rather than by the site.
Can I use the output commercially?
Yes. We claim no rights over your documents or the files produced from them, and we add nothing to the output.
